The Digital Product Passport is based on the EU Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR), which entered into force on July 18, 2024, and applies directly across all member states. It mandates manufacturers, importers, and authorized representatives to provide a DPP for regulated product categories—regardless of their company headquarters.
However, the ESPR does not explicitly specify the exact data requirements or the enforcement dates. Instead, these are determined on a product-by-product basis through delegated acts.
The first prioritized product groups include iron and steel, aluminum, textiles (especially apparel), furniture (including mattresses), tires, energy-related products, information/communication technology products, and electronics. While specific regulations are already in place for sectors such as batteries or construction products, additional product groups like toys are set to follow.
